At the June 2008 South Dakota Synod Assembly a resolution supporting the Book of Faith initiative was passed. The final resolve of that resolution is:
RESOLVED, that we encourage all congregations to become a “Book of Faith” congregation, which will find expression by
• exploring new opportunities for engaging the Bible,
• sending sufficient numbers of members to synod events for training as Bible study leaders,
• including biblical study as an integral part of all meetings and groups, in order to become more fluent in the first language of faith--the language of Scripture--that we might live into our calling as a people renewed, enlivened, empowered, and sent by the Word.

have agreed to be the Book of Faith Advocates for the South Dakota Synod. Jodi Hanson shares this image: “One image particularly struck me at the synod advocates gathering in Chicago in August 2008. A church historian described how in the 1950s, Lutheran church leaders discerned that Lutherans were becoming too generically Protestant in their understanding of the sacraments. Over the course of 25 years a Lutheran sacramental understanding was regrounded in the tradition. He suggested that reclaiming our biblical heritage, being comfortable in knowledge, conversation level, and ability to teach, could be the challenge for this generation of Lutherans. I found that image both grounding and challenging. This is not a quick fix. We are in this for the long haul. How can we energize and encourage each other through shared commitment and resourcing?”
One way to begin is to go the Book of Faith website. There you can find information on the development of this movement, bible studies that you can download, resources that you can buy, and a place to register you or your congregation's commitment to be part of this movement.
If you want to ask questions or share ideas please join the conversation on the Book of Faith Forum website. This website includes many ongoing conversations and resource ideas as well as a specific group for the South Dakota Synod.
