Building Church in Times of Crisis:
Preaching’s Role in Forming the Identity and Mission of the Church

With Matthew Fleming

What does it mean to be the church in the 21st century? How is preaching relevant to people’s lives in our ever-changing society? In a time of economic unrest, there is a growing sense of uncertainty regarding how people understand themselves and their place in the church. For our Fall Theological Conference, we will examine the roles of preaching in the formation of the ecclesial identity with a particular emphasis on engaging in ministry during a period of economic crisis. During our session we will examine how preaching contributes to the ministry and mission  of our local church. How can we show congregations how they participate in the continuing story of God? How does this story shape our lives and that of the church? In addition, we will examine the importance of supporting our proclamation with theological  practices that will bind and strengthen our communities of faith.

Matthew Fleming Matthew Fleming teaches preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary. Previously, he taught at Princeton Theological Seminary and the Candler School of Theology. He is completing his doctoral studies at Emory University under Thomas G. Long. His work may be found in Call to Worship, Feasting on the Work, Homily Service, and Lectionary Homiletics. Matt spoke at the 2009 Festival of Homiletics and will do so again in 2010. His teachings and writings focus on theologies and practices of ministry that will shape and sustain prophetic preaching. He is married to the Rev. Mandy Sloan and is the proud father of two sons, Jackson and Cooper.
